Abstract
This chapter addresses some fundamental ethical aspects of paediatric psychopharmacology research. Minors are indeed a vulnerable population. However, stating this does not suffice. Medical research has a horrible dark history, and the rights of human beings have been repetitively violated by physicians regardless of the Hippocratic Oath or ethical standards. This chapter presents a historical perspective, the Nuremberg Code, the Declaration of Geneva, the Declaration of Helsinki, and the Belmont Report. Per nature, ethics is an evolving field. With the inception of worldwide paediatric regulations evidencing a current societal shift from protecting children against clinical research to a new emerging paradigm of protecting children through clinical research, more research is anticipated. Therefore taking into account that each paediatric research is different and unique, our objective is to bring a conceptual perspective rather than provide an ethical checklist. Additionally, specific considerations on paediatric psychopharmacology will be discussed.
