Abstract

This chapter presents applications to communication systems. Error-control techniques for communication systems are classified into two groups: (1) forward error correction (FEC) and (2) automatic repeat request (ARQ). FEC is the technique in which the transmission bit errors are corrected at the receive end by applying an error-correcting code, while ARQ is the scheme to request the retransmission of data, when the receive end detects the transmission errors by using the error-detecting codes. The FEC decoder is more complicated than the error-detecting decoder used in ARQ system. The system configuration for applying FEC to the communication network can be classified into two categories: (1) application of the error-correcting codes within the network, and (2) application of the error-correcting codes between end users.
