Abstract

On October, 503, Silla has carried out Honorific Title Reform to crown itself King. This articles aims to explain the process of the Title Reform in relation to the precedented Title and its historical continuity. By 25th September 503, all the preceding Kings were promoted because the names of the next kings cannot be ranked higher than those of the late kings. Retainers proposed the Title change on October in the Royal Palace and the administrator agreed with it. A crucial point here is that the precedented rulers were not literally kings but Maripgans or Isageums which are traditional names in Silla to name the rulers. Documents had to be revised to create a National History, following a general trend in implementing such a nominal reform in Ancient East Asia. In a way, Silla accepted the historical implications of Maripgans’s political power and Isageum’s virtue. Not only does the Title Change imply wide repercussions on Silla but also it represents that Silla has finally recognized its role and identity from larger, more global perspective.
