Abstract

5G technology has achieved high-precision timing technology with time synchronization accuracy of microseconds level, provides very good communication foundation for differential protection of the distribution network. Form the characteristic of wireless communication, the uncertainty of air interface is mainly from time delay Up-and-Down time slot ratio mechanism of wireless transmission and retransmission mechanism. Differential protection based on 5G timing is proposed. Field test has carried out since 2018 in Shenzhen grid and 2021 in Guangzhou. The results shows that the time delay of 5G wireless communication can decrease to within 10ms, comparable with wired communication. Synchronization accuracy is less than 300ns, much better than specification, and can be used as timing stamp for differential protection. But the time delay varies from 6ms to 60ms. On one hand, it verifies the uncertainty of wireless communication. On the other hand, the differential protection should design larger memory to restore more sample value.
