Abstract

Drugs used for nontherapeutic reasons, but rather for cosmetic purposes, purely social reasons or to enhance athletic or other abilities are collectively referred to as lifestyle drugs. It is a diverse category of unrelated drugs and since many are also used for other conventional clinical purposes, their pharmacology is described elsewhere in this book. In this chapter we present an overview of lifestyle drugs illustrating the topic with three specific examples: cognitive enhancers, ‘pharmacosex’ and the use of drugs in sport. We also introduce some of the ethical, social and medico-legal problems associated with the ‘lifestyle drug phenomenon’ and also the related concept of ‘human enhancement’.
