Abstract

Congenital cardiac disease should be considered as a possible diagnosis in an infant or child with respiratory distress, cyanosis or shock. Immediate management of congenital cardiac disease follows basic principles of resuscitation, but all these patients require consultation with paediatric cardiology and/or paediatric intensive care unit (PICU)/transport service. Complications following surgery for congenital cardiac disease are a frequent cause of presentation and require some specific knowledge and skills to manage.
