Abstract
The decay schemes of the states below 4 MeV in 54Fe, excited by inelastic proton scattering at bombarding energies between 7.0 MeV and 8.5 MeV were determined by particle-gamma-ray coincidence experiments. The method of particle-gamma-ray angular correlations presented by Litherland and Ferguson was applied to determine unambiguously the spins of the states at 1.41 MeV, 2.96 MeV, 3.16 MeV and 3.83 MeV as J = 2, 2, 2 and 4, respectively. The spin of the state at 3.34 MeV was limited to the values 2, 3, 4. Information upon radiative mixing ratios in the decay of the states at 2.96 MeV, 3.16 MeV and 3.83 MeV was also obtained. The results are compared with spin assignments from inelastic electron, proton and alpha-particle measurements and are discussed in terms of models of nuclear structure.
