Abstract

This chapter discusses the use and importance of mapping during planning of a city and its development. Maps are indispensable for planners. They should be indispensable for every citizen who wishes to understand his city or who does some traveling, locally or to distant places. A map is useful not only to show the arrangement of streets and avenues but for land use designation and zoning. Maps make vivid the distribution of playgrounds and other recreational facilities in relation to residential areas and the frequency of schools with reference to student distribution. Types of maps are legion. Among one of the most valuable in city planning, but used too little by those persons who have occasion to consider urban problems, is the topographic map. Geological maps that tell the story of what is below the surface are of outstanding value. A map shows only what is true at the time of its drafting. It serves as the basis for planning the future and accordingly, as the years elapse, must be revised.
