Abstract

Asthma is a common, chronic, and potentially debilitating disease. Acute asthma events (also known as asthma exacerbations) occur relatively frequently for most asthmatic patients in response to viral respiratory infections, environmental allergies, or irritant exposures (e.g., air pollution). When an exacerbation occurs, patients may require medical attention if self-management approaches fail; when severe, emergency department (ED) management may be required. The goal of ED management is to stabilize the patient with acute asthma, prevent intubation, and safely avoid hospitalization. In the ED, most patients with acute asthma do not require initial laboratory studies or simple imaging. A brief clinical examination and measurement of vitals (including oxygen saturation) and pulmonary function testing is indicated.
