Abstract

Miniaturization and advanced manufacturing of MEMS technologies have allowed their integration in compact and wearable sensing devices, opening the way to advanced applications in human motion analysis, activity recognition, and health monitoring. The limited form factor and the need for comfortable solutions open interesting research challenges, which will be illustrated in this chapter. The reader will be introduced to hardware and software development of wearable MEMS solutions that provide advanced sensing, processing, and communication capabilities, with limited power consumption and adequate ergonomic characteristics. The general development scenario and tools will be illustrated through the design of a wearable inertial measurement unit, which will be shown in healthcare applications for gait analysis, rehabilitation, and assessment of physical conditions.
