Abstract

Replacement of petroleum asphalt by bioasphalt from renewable sources in paving applications can substantially reduce the cost, save the resource, and protect the environment. Summarized in this chapter is recent research studies on engineering properties of asphalt binder and mixture containing bioasphalt derived from castor in conventional properties and performance properties of asphalt binder modified with the bioasphalt, service properties of asphalt mixture using asphalt binder modified with the bioasphalt, and performance properties of asphalt binder rejuvenated with the bioasphalt. In general, the castor bioasphalt is a promising alternative to petroleum asphalt as a modifier and a rejuvenator with appropriate contents. Further research is required to improve the properties of the modified or rejuvenated asphalt binder and mixture.
