Abstract
Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) is an emergent aquatic plant, which produces the most sustainable cellulosic fibre from its peduncle and rhizomes. It is the finest naturally occurring cellulosic fibre having all the qualities to be spun into fine textile yarn. The lissome fibre has fineness, long continuous length, cohesiveness and elasticity. Drawing methods of lotus fibre, its morphology, chemical composition, and physicochemical characterization have been discussed. Chemical characterization of lotus fibre has been compared with cotton fibre. Lotus cultivation and product merchandizing are included and discussed in the chapter. The antiquity, cultural, and therapeutic significance of the aquatic lotus plant is well established over the years. The antiquity of lotus fibre and lotus biomimicking has been addressed.
