Abstract

New or upcoming manufacturing technologies offer the big opportunity for future plastic medical devices to emerge from the current state to a new level. It may be possible to allow totally new designs on the one hand, but also implementing specific characteristics into plastic medical devices more easily like specialized surfaces, counterfeit protection tricks, or antibacterial behavior. After focusing on trends in the regulatory world, device design, and 3D-printing, the focus of this chapter is on emerging manufacturing technologies for improved plastic medical devices. The aim behind the presented technologies is mainly to improve the benefit of new plastic medical device on the one hand, but also try to help keeping the cost of existing and future devices down.
