Abstract

Abstract Intensification refers to the application of practices designed to increase productivity. Environmental conditions determine the degree of intensification permissible—economic factors dictate the rate of progress through the stages of intensification to the one set by the environment. Farm profit maximisation requires adherance to the principle of “maximisation to the limiting factor”. Land, labour, capital and management are the four possible limiting factors. Any decision regarding beef intensification must be made taking into account the prevalent limiting factor on the farm concerned. The Natal Midlands has tremendous potential with regard to beef intensification. Management tends to be the limiting factor in this area, thus intensification based on a comparative evaluation, using returns per unit of land as a yardstick, can be misleading. Strategic intensification can in many instances result in better farm net profitability.
