Abstract

In recent years, there has been a real growth of interest in the use of high-temperature molten salt fluorides in nuclear power systems. For all molten salt reactor and fuel cycle-related concepts materials selection is a very important issue. Selection of the salt composition strongly depends on the specific design application: fluid fuel, primary or secondary coolant, heat transport fluid as well as solvent system in spent reprocessing unit. In this chapter we have compiled information, either measured or estimated, on materials performance in molten salt mixtures that are presently of importance in reactor designs. Key physical and chemical factors that influence material compatibility are also analyzed for the screening candidate salts as applied to different applications. The primary user of this compilation will be the nuclear engineer of molten salt reactor and fuel cycle designs. Experts in the chemistry of molten salts may be another audience interested in this chapter.
