Abstract

The formation mechanism of the chromate film by the chromate treatment was not a clear film formation theory because it passed through the gel state of hydroxide at the time of formation. Therefore the author performed chromate treatment on various metals from base metals to noble metals, and examined the mechanism of each film formation. It was found that the film thickness grew in relation to the metal electrode potential. The formation of a chromate film also follows the phenomenon of dissolution of a substrate metal. Therefore it can be explained clearly by the theory proposed by the author and explained in Chapter 3, Metal corrosion. It also describes the film structure formed and its physical properties.
