Abstract
Food packaging material is a part of our daily life. Since food interacts with the packaging material for some time before it is purchased by the consumer, it can be used to enhance the food and the consumer experience by revolutionizing the food packaging industry. However, before that, the food packaging material is expected to have certain characteristics that assist in its function of increasing food shelf life. This chapter explores a few main characteristics related to a natural source, bionanocomposite polymers, that will eventually replace petroleum-based polymers by discussing the permeability test methods for vapor and gas, wettability, thermal characterization, mechanical properties and some smart revolution that are explored in food packaging materials. A summary of a few selected studies on natural bionanocomposite polymers are also discussed in this chapter to show an example of the trend in its properties. It is hoped that this chapter will inspire more research activities on natural bionanocomposite polymers for food packaging that will mold the future of our food industry.
