Abstract

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is a connection-oriented reliable protocol accounting for over 80 percent of network traffic. This chapter presents an architecture designed to address the most significant issues in achieving full TCP termination for multigigabit Ethernet traffic. In addition to high-speed protocol processing requirements, the efficient handling of Ethernet traffic involves addressing several issues at the system level, such as transfer of payload and management of CPU interrupts. This implies that a TCP offload engine is only part of the solution and a system-level approach has to be taken to achieve significant improvements in TCP processing. The approach used here incorporates a high-speed processing engine with a DMA controller and other hardware assist blocks as well as system-level optimizations. A detailed architectural description of this solution is given and the results of preliminary performance analysis, to gauge the capability of this architecture, are described in this chapter. Analysis reinforces that architecture, featuring a specialpurpose multithreaded processing engine, optimal hardware assist blocks, and streamlined interfaces, coupled with a simplified programming model, provides the necessary performance and flexibility.
