Abstract
This chapter focuses on common geometry module (CGM) functionality. A picture is made up of a number of primitives that are the basic units of the picture. A primitive is a very basic, low level component of the drawing. The main primitives available in the CGM can be split into 5 types of elements that are: (1) line elements, (2) marker element, (3) text elements, (4) filled-area elements, and (5) cell array element. The CGM standard defines a number of elements that indicate the way in which the information is stored in the metafile. The CGM has an escape mechanism for requirements that go beyond those defined in the standard. The CGM standard allows information to be stored, which contains instructions to an operator through a message element. The CGM also allows application data to be stored although there is no specification of the way that this information can be used. The CGM standard defines a number of elements that divide a metafile into its components.
