Abstract

Carbon nanofibers and carbon nanofiber composites are used in many fields such as electrical devices, electrode material for batteries, gas sensors, biomedicines, and supercapacitors. Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) can be synthesized by mainly three methods: electrospinning, substrate, and catalytic chemical vapor deposition growth. Functionalized CNFs are synthesized by adding metallic nanoparticles (NPs), metal oxide NPs, alloy, silica, polymers, etc. into CNFs. These functionalized CNFs shows enhanced gas sensing response. Enhanced response of CNFs functionalized sensor is due to p–n heterojunction that is formed between the two materials. Also, the chemically active sites with large surface area and better conductivity lead to superior response of sensor.
