Abstract
1. 1. 5-Aminovaleric acid was identified as a major free amino acid component of red fox, Vulpes vulpes, anal sac secretion using combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. 2. 2. Other free basic amino acids were largely absent, although neutral and acidic amino acids were observed. 3. 3. Significant ( P < 0.001) positive correlations of 5-aminovaleric acid concentration with secretion volatile fatty acid (C 2 to C 6) concentration and with secretion ammonia concentration were noted. 4. 4. A possible microbial origin for the 5-aminovaleric acid is discussed.
