Abstract
Universal design is a paradigm in which products, buildings and outdoors spaces are created to be usable by all people. Ultimately products and spaces that are universally designed will support social integration of all people regardless of their size, age or conditions affecting sight, hearing, cognition or physical ability. Applications of universal design address personal needs in the home, in public and at work; the best examples of universal design become invisible as a result of their benefit and acceptance by all individuals. Universal design is framed around seven principles: equitable use, flexibility in use, simple and intuitive use, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort and size and space for approach and use. As a result of their training in ability assessment, occupational therapists are strong candidates for home and work design modification consultants and may benefit from implementing the universal design principles in their daily practice.
