Abstract

The prevalence of drug related problems (DRPs) in patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) has been estimated to be 5-26% of all ED visits. Many studies use retrospective data, do not include a drug expert in the evaluation of data and do not include inner city hospitals. The goal of our study thus was to prospectively determine the prevalence, category, severity and preventability of DRPs in patients presenting to the ED of a large, urban, Level I trauma center with and without a pharmacist involved in the patient care process.
