Abstract

In the present study, degradation of poly (lactide) (PLA) and poly (butylene succinate) (PBSU) blends with different mixed fraction were investigated. PLA/PBSU (80/20) was exhibited highest water absorption during hydrolysis tests, whereas biodegradation rate was increased in PLA/PBSU (20/80) on soil burial. Tensile tests were conducted on the blends after 0, 8 and l6weeks hydrolysis tests to evaluate the variation in modulus of elasticity and tensile strength. Modulus of elasticity and tensile strength decreased with increasing PBSU. On the other hand, tensile strength of PBSU was higher than PLA/PBSU (50/50). Modulus of elasticity were less sensitive to hydrolysis, however tensile strength of PBSU content of 50-80w% depend on the hydrolysis tests. It appears that degradation rate increased with increasing PBSU.
