Abstract
The textile industry was the very first to embrace industrial revolution and many world economies depended on its evolution for their political dominance for a very long time. This chapter discusses the importance of innovation-driven research and development for the sustainable growth of the textile and clothing industry, reviewing the definition of innovation in general and looking at important innovations in the sector over the last 60 years. The scientific and technological advances made during this time frame are unprecedented. The role of textile universities and research institutes in the process of innovation is discussed, together with some models for successful implementation of ideas in industrial applications. The chapter, finally, discusses future innovative challenges relating to the textile industry.
