Abstract

If the person performing the investigation of the problem does not have enough information to perform the investigation, the investigation may result in addressing the wrong issue or problem. Having the right problem statement enables the investigator to perform an investigation of the right issue. Doing a thorough job of identifying the problem is step number one of the nine-step process. By writing a proper problem statement, you can force yourself to remain focused on getting to the right issue at hand. This will allow the investigator to ultimately achieve better investigation results and to not waste time pursuing unnecessary avenues or detours from the main goal—which is to eliminate the reoccurrence of the issue or nonconforming event. This chapter explains the right elements for writing proper problem statements, and the level of detail needed in order to have enough information to perform a proper investigation. This helps to save time and achieve a faster, more effective investigation process.
