Abstract

Establishing the need for a change and getting started with the implementation of that change can be a difficult process; however, once the decision has been made and the task of building a firm's safety culture kicks off, a determination of where and how it should be begun must occur. The way in which things are done in almost every department of an organization should be assessed for safety culture. Top management must assist with the kickoff and stay involved throughout. Before beginning any program implementation, the question of cost will surely arise. Estimates will be forthcoming to include fixed and variable costs. For many companies, the cost of program administration adds little extra cost. When an organization is attempting to build or develop a strong safety culture, it should start with a strong foundation. Taking adequate time and effort in the hiring process will pay off down the road. This chapter discusses the points that are keys to an effective hiring process.
