Abstract

Optimal perioperative care of the thoracic surgical patient results in safe, timely, quality thoracic surgical outcomes. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is being promoted and adopted by thoracic surgeons worldwide. However, thoracic surgeons have embraced clinical pathways and evidence-based protocols for patient care for decades to improve short- and long-term patient outcomes. The teamwork and planning required are overseen by the surgeon and start as soon as the patient is a possible surgical candidate, not when the patient arrives to the operating suite. It does not end when the patient is discharged from the hospital but continues until the patient is fully recovered from the surgical procedure. This chapter is a brief overview of preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative aspects to provide the best quality of care for thoracic surgical patients.
