Abstract
The construction of the Freedom Road began in August 1990 and was completed in September, 1994. It was carried out, along with the construction of a garden as a part of building a village as announced in September 1989 for the larger Plan for the Unification of the Korean National Community. People living in the new cities would be unlikely to survive an all out war between North and South Korea. Thus, it is in these cities near The Freedom Road, more than anywhere else, that peace and unification movements are most needed as bastions against a possible war. And even the name the road has been given takes on significance. The Han River estuary is a joint civilian waterway for both South and North Korea. The DMZ ends in Jungdong-li, Jangdan, near the Sahchun River, which is located above the Unification Observatory on Odu Mountain.
