Abstract

Recent studies on Aplysia have indicated that a cellular mechanism called activity-dependent neuromodulation may contribute to classical conditioning observed on a behavioral level. This chapter illustrates a proposed general cellular scheme of the activity-dependent neuromodulation. The chapter presents a model of the sensory neuron, including descriptions of a variety of subcellular processes. The approach was to begin with generally accepted principles of neuronal function, transform these into mathematical formalisms, and determine the values of constants using available experimental data. Components of the model were then linked together as a system of equations to describe the overall function of a sensory neuron. The chapter illustrates some of the major components of the model and their interactions.
