Abstract

The reader is reminded that our understanding elemental properties can be from a quantum description of atomic orbitals derived for the hydrogen atom. The extension from elements to elemental and compound solids is based on electronic hybridization due to overlap of atomic orbitals. Selected properties of technologically important metallic solids and materials in Groups IIA to VIA are examined in greater detail, especially the carbon allotropes and III–V semiconductors.
