Abstract

Computers have become ubiquitous in modern life, and the modern practice of medicine is no exception. The connection of multiple computer and clinical systems has allowed the development of sophisticated Anesthesia Information Management Systems (AIMS), often as part of large health system wide Electronic Health Records (EHR). These systems allow the electronic health record to become a central resource available for multiple users to access simultaneously, a significant development from paper based charts. The deployment of EHRs in perioperative care has led to important contributions to the delivery of medical care and the support of clinical decision making. The storage of health information in electronic formats requires particular care in the maintenance of the privacy of those described by the health information, in the security of information transfer, and in methods to ensure that access is only granted to authorized individuals. The secondary use of EHR data has provided for new opportunities in perioperative research and the measurement of the quality of clinical care.
