Abstract

The increasing pollution of water resources has its origin in several human activities such as industry, domestic uses, agriculture, etc. These pollutants have raised considerable concern because they may affect human health. Thus, there is a necessity to develop new techniques to remove them from water bodies. One of the most widely used processes to remove pollutants from water is the advanced oxidation processes. Recently, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and hybrid LDHs are emerging as promising catalysts for eliminating of toxic organic synthetic dyes from water and wastewater. They have shown outstanding catalytic performance owing to their large surface area and chemical stability. The LDHs and LDHs-containing hybrids are cost-effective and readily available. Herein, we summarize the preparation and characterization methods and recent progress of LDHs and hybrid LDHs as highly efficient catalysts for the remediation of synthetic dyes from the aquatic environment. The mechanism of catalytic removal of different organic dyes by the LDHs and hybrid LDHs will be evaluated. This chapter ends with concluding remarks, research challenges, and perspectives in this research field.
