Abstract

This chapter discusses recent progress in optically and electrically pumped quantum dot (QD) micropillar lasers. The chapter first reviews the fabrication of high-quality, optically and electrically pumped microlasers. The chapter then discusses results from high-β optically pumped micropillar lasers with a focus on the observation of single QD lasing effects. In addition, electrically pumped micropillar lasers that feature ultra low threshold currents in the 10μA range and diameters down to 1.5μm are addressed. This part also includes a discussion of whispering gallery mode emission from laterally emitting micropillar lasers.
