Abstract

This chapter examines how classification theories can be applied in the digital information environment. Vocabulary control and thesaurus construction are studied in the context of creating subject trees as structured browsing environments. Then practical, user-centred taxonomy creation and maintenance are explored. The concept of ontology in the context of information management is explained. Finally, collaborative classification and the impact of user-generated content to provide an additional level of organisation to web-based information are discussed.
