Abstract
Background: Bone regeneration is mostly achieved by the formation of new microvessels from existing vessels. Insufficient vascularisation results in compromised bone formation. In addition, neovascularisation encourages cells necessary for bone repair. Scaffolds with larger pore sizes as template for bone regeneration are favourable for ingrowth of cells and vessels. However, the mechanical strength will be reduced.
