Abstract

The previous chapter surveyed the upper digestive tract, from the mouth through the stomach. This chapter continues the story of digestion with an exploration of the lower digestive tract. This portion of the alimentary canal includes the small intestine and large intestine. We will also take the opportunity to discuss the large glands that open into the lower digestive tract—the liver and pancreas—and their associated structures.
