Abstract

In the previous chapter we began our survey of the central or axial skeleton. This chapter continues the survey of bones of the human skeleton by exploring the peripheral or appendicular skeleton. The term appendicular literally means “relating to appendages,” which are the upper extremity and the lower extremity. The upper extremity includes the bones of the shoulder girdle, arm, forearm, wrist, and hand (including fingers). The lower extremity includes the bones of the pelvic (hip) girdle, thigh, leg, ankle, and foot (including toes). The extremities or appendages involve many of the movable joints of the body—a topic that will be explored next, in Chapter 14. •
