Abstract

Children and young people (CYP) with severe asthma comprise a small proportion of the total asthma population; however, the short- and long-term impacts on their lives are significant. Persistent symptoms can interfere with normal childhood activities, and they are at risk of severe attacks and asthma-related deaths. Poorly controlled asthma has a detrimental effect on the quality of life and school attendance, leading to higher rates of mental illness and lower school attainment than non-asthmatic peers. However, progress in our understanding and management of asthma in recent years has advanced considerably such that achieving good control and minimizing the risk of attacks and treatment-related side effects should be the goal of all teams managing CYP with severe asthma.
