Abstract

Rhabdomyolysis is a pathologic process in which there is acute muscle breakdown. While the most common causes in children are acquired, infection, and exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis, understanding when and how to evaluate patients presenting with rhabdomyolysis is important. While rare, complications such as acute renal injury can occur. In addition, rhabdomyolysis can be an early presentation of an underlying genetic or metabolic disease in which early recognition can result in better overall care for the patient.
