Abstract

Objectives: To illustrate the sonographic findings of the various pseudotumors manifested as clinically palpable lesions. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the sonographic findings of pseudotumors. The pseudotumors are defined as palpable and uncomfortable masses to patients. We categorized two groups according to involvement site: bony lesion and soft tissue lesion. We evaluated what conditions make palpable masses and their sonographic findings. Results: Bony lesions included pseudomasses of backs due to prominent rib, prominent transverse process and elevated scapula. Soft tissue lesions included thrombophlebitis, tendinous structure, muscle retraction associated with tear, muscle or fat herniation via fascial plane and localized subcutaneous fat deposition in various location; buttock, shin, back, knee, posterior neck and so on.Conclusions: The various nonneoplastic conditions of bony andsoft tissue structures can represent tumor-like lesions, pseudotumors. In the clinically palpable lesions, the real-time examination of ultrasonography is a very useful and feasible diagnostic method for differentiation of pseudotumors from true mass lesions and their characterization.
