Abstract

Free medical clinics provide health care to ∼1.8 million Americans annually with more than 3 million medical visits. Resources such as the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics database exist to provide the public information regarding free clinics in the community. To the best of our knowledge, a registry of free clinics specifically providing dermatology services does not exist. The aim of this project was to compile a registry of free clinics providing dermatological care via a survey. The survey consisted of 13 questions. These questions sought to obtain information regarding the demographics of the clinic (ie, location, contact person) in addition to the types of patients seen, dermatology services offered, most common presenting skin conditions, funding, etc. The survey was initially distributed state-wide (ie, Texas) and then nationally via distribution of this survey to dermatologists, dermatology staff, and other healthcare professionals (both in academic centers and private practice) with the use of various methods including email listservs, dissemination at conferences, and word of mouth. Preliminary data has identified 6 free clinics in Texas providing dermatology services and 31 free clinics nationally (including Texas). The 5 most common presenting skin conditions at these clinics, in no particular order, include dermatitis, skin cancer, acne, psoriasis, and benign skin neoplasms. Upon concluding this project, the data will be made publicly available through a registry to facilitate access to care.
