Abstract

In this chapter, carbon nanocluster-based superhard materials are reviewed. In addition to their high scientific value, and a variety of impressive mechanical properties, these unique materials have great prospects for industrial applications. The superhard phase of nanotubes is comparable to diamond in terms of the bulk modulus and the hardness. The bulk modulus and hardness of isotropic ultrahard fullerite are twice as large as those of diamond. Determination of the mechanical properties demands special measurement procedures because of their extremely high hardness and elastic module. Modern solutions to hardness measurement problems of diamond are also discussed in this chapter.
