Abstract

Children exposed to alcohol and drugs in utero often present with a multitude of mental health symptoms, including ADHD-like symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. As a clinician trying to sort through caregiver and teacher reports, it can be challenging to understand whether symptoms are consistent with the neurologic sequalae of in utero exposure alone or whether they are truly within the range of ADHD symptomatology. It can also be challenging to understand to what extent symptoms are improving or worsening with medication adjustments. With the time pressures that some psychiatrists face for medication management visits and when family systems are in chaos, the information provided to psychiatrists can be confusing and at times contradictory and can lead to decisions about medication that may not be in the best interest of the child. It is therefore helpful to have additional, objective measures to help guide medication decisions.
