Abstract

What is the origin and hence justification for ethical principles, moral theories, laws, case precedents, and virtues? If one excludes edicts from religion or absolute rulers, the alternative is from the consensus of those subject to the ethical principles, moral theories, laws, case precedents, and virtues. The central question is how to abstract ethical principles, moral theories, laws, case precedents, and virtues from a consensus group. Historically, those who make up the consensus are expected to be reasonable persons blinded to their self-interest. The question is whether this is feasible. Further, how is one to have confidence that the consensus truly reflects those to be governed? This is an empirical question as any science. Further, it represents a form of inductive logic where generalities are abstracted from particular as in any science. As such, the science of Induction, such as statistical reasoning, can be applied to ethics.
