Abstract

This chapter is devoted to the powders used for metal injection molding (MIM) and serves as an introduction to the most prevalent forms of MIM powder fabrication. The ideal powder characteristics are provided to offer guidance in selecting various grades that a user may require. The different methods of powder fabrication and resulting powder characteristics are provided. The subsequent effect of these powder characteristics on the MIM process is touched upon and illustrates the need for knowledge of powder fabrication technique in determining the proper powder for alloy development in a MIM process. Finally, the different techniques commonly used for MIM powder characterization are presented.
