Abstract

Although miniaturization represents a global trend of our time, development of adequate manufacturing processes for metal and ceramic materials is still widespread. A promising solution is micro powder injection molding (MicroPIM), which has already reached a remarkable technological level and applications have successfully entered the market. Smallest details in the micrometer range have been achieved with different kinds of metal (steel, iron alloys, copper, tungsten, etc.) and ceramic powders. Powder particle size has been identified as one of the most influential factors concerning surface quality and accuracy. By way of further progress in micromanufacturing, two-component and in-mold-labeling MicroPIM are under development. Both variants allow for the fabrication of multimaterial, and thus multifunctional products with the additional benefit of reduced assembly costs.
