Abstract

The oncology nurse navigator (ONN) role has been in existence for over 30 years. Patient navigation provides important support to breast cancer patients, as well as their families, and caregivers, as they deal with all of the phases of their diagnosis and treatment. ONN’s assist in addressing barriers to care and providing important education and guidance to patients, especially in the early days of their diagnosis. They facilitate access to quality multidisciplinary cancer care by improving coordination of care and communication, assessment, and adherence to treatment recommendations. Patient navigation is an accreditation standard that ensures that cancer programs meet quality standards. Cancer programs benefit from patient navigation by increasing patient retention and downstream revenue. Core competencies for ONN’s assist with role standardization and improve understanding of the role and responsibilities.
