Abstract

Consistent with national trends, San Francisco adolescents have the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), a disproportionate number of which occur among African Americans. While STIs most incident to adolescents (chlamydia and gonorrhea) are curable, they are commonly asymptomatic, detectable only through clinical screening. In April 2006, Internet Sexuality Information Services (ISIS) and the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) launched a text messaging service, SexInfo, to provide youth with medically accurate information on STIs, HIV, and pregnancy as well as referrals for free sexual health services.
