The kinds of mathematical processes, understandings, and abilities that are used in modeling are seldom emphasized in traditional mathematics textbooks, tests, and teaching. In a class of problems that 1 call model-eliciting activities, students engage in activities that are recognized and valued in the world outside the classroom. These activities include higher-level reasoning, planning, monitoring, and the use of multiple representations and technological tools.
